‘Photojournalists play key role in providing information to public through pictures’

A picture is worth a thousand words and photojournalists play an important role in disseminating and providing information to the public through their pictures, said Andhra Pradesh CR Media Academy chairman Alapati Suresh Kumar.

Participating in a programme organised by the Andhra Pradesh Photojournalists’ Association (APPJA) to mark the World Photography Day, at the Press Club in Vijayawada on Tuesday, Mr. Suresh Kumar said that a picture not just captures the present, but also serves as a visual record for the future generations.

Later, while presenting awards to the winners of a photography contest organised by the association recently, Mr. Suresh Kumar said that every winning photo is inspiration and has a message for the people. More than 550 pictures were submitted in the contest from across the country and 50 of them were selected for various prizes.

NTR District Collector G. Lakshmisha, who was also present, congratulated the winners and later looked at the vintage cameras on display.

Two photojournalists from The Hindu received awards in the contest. K.R. Deepak, chief photographer, The Hindu, Andhra Pradesh, received first prize for his work ‘Lightning’, while K.V.S. Giri, senior special news photographer, The Hindu, Vijayawada, received third prize for his work ‘Save The New Generation’ in the ‘Spot News’ category.

Meanwhile, V. Raju, special news photographer, The Hindu, Visakhapatnam, received a certificate of merit for his work ‘Struggle On The Road’ and Vijay Kumar Soneji, special news photographer, The Hindu, Ahmedabad, received a certificate of merit for his work ‘Plane Crash’ in the same category.
