Piligao locals block ore transport, want weighing bridge removed

Bicholim: Piligao locals have yet again blocked ore transportation on the Piligao-Sarmanas main road, on Monday. This time they are protesting the erection of a structure for a weighing bridge.

The villagers alleged that the mining company did not seek the panchayat’s permission before building the structure that is blocking the access of several houses. Vendata Sesa has refuted the charge.The agitated locals said they will protest until the structure is removed. Panch member Mohini Jalmi said the access to villagers residing on other end of the construction has been blocked. “The mining company should immediately remove the structure as the access route of 15 families has been blocked,” said Jalmi.She said the locals are also upset because the mining company has not stopped transportation in the monsoon. Sarpanch Sharmila Walawalkar said that they have written twice to the mining company to stop ore transportation during the rains. The last letter was sent in June. “But there has been no response from them. The main road has become slippery and is causing several accidents,” said Walawalkar, demanding an immediate demolition of the structure.

Vedanta Sesa Goa spokesperson denied the allegation. “Vedanta Sesa Goa assures all stakeholders that operations are being conducted in strict adherence to all applicable environmental, safety, and regulatory norms.”Advocate Ajay Prabhugaonkar alleged that the mining company has failed to comply with the standard operating procedure (SOPs) for ore transportation. The main road has deposits of mining slurry, and the company has not cleaned it. “Mining deposits flow into the canal along with rainwater which has been a source of irrigation. If this is not stopped, mining rejects will enter peoples’ houses. Villagers are suffering, but people are only concerned about the mining company,” he said.The spokesperson said, “The company values its long-standing association with the community, and is engaging with all, including the civil administration, through continued dialogue and cooperation.”
