The Pittsburgh Penguins are dropping hints about their captain, Sidney Crosby's return from his lower-body injury, but the team is sending mixed signals as the playoff race tightens.
According to earlier reports, Crosby has been sidelined from the team since suffering a Grade 2 MCL sprain in his right knee while playing for Team Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics, an injury later revealed by teammate Mitch Marner after weeks of organizational silence.Since sustaining a lower-body injury in the 2026 Winter Olympics quarterfinal against Czechia, Crosby has yet to make an official appearance. Initial reports provided a roughly four-week recovery window, but the Penguins have yet to commit to an official target date for their captain’s return to game action.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are sending mixed signals and dropping hints about Sidney Crosby’s potential return from injury. Crosby has been sidelined since suffering a lower-body injury while representing Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics, where he exited during the quarterfinal matchup against Czechia. The Penguins later placed the 38-year-old on injured reserve and announced he would miss at least four weeks as he recovers.
Earlier, Josh Yohe, a Penguins beat writer, revealed that Sidney Crosby took reps on power-play duties during Pittsburgh’s morning skate. He even posted on X/Twitter that, “Crosby getting some power play work. Probably a good sign.” Shortly afterward, he posted that Sidney Crosby won’t appear in tonight’s game, “Looks like Sid will remain out tonight,” he added.
Meanwhile, head coach Dan Muse recently described Crosby’s rehab as “going in the right direction” and praised having him back on the ice in practice, yet emphasized that “nothing’s changed” regarding his status and that the team will take it a step at a time.
Though Crosby might miss another game this season, the club has managed to hold its ground in his absence.Meanwhile, the Penguins are currently second in the Metro Division, and they are tied in points with the New York Islanders (81 each), and just one point ahead of the wild card teams, the Boston Bruins and the New York Islanders. As reports indicate that Crosby has resumed skating and light work with teammates, fueling the belief that he could rejoin the lineup later in March if his condition improves.
