Mumbai and large parts of Maharashtra are witnessing heavy rain, with the IMD issuing a red alert for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad, and an orange alert for the Konkan belt. Amid this, a landslide near Sinhagad Fort’s first gate has added to weekend safety concerns for tourists planning a monsoon escape from the city.
With intense rain forecast to continue till July 5, low-lying areas of Mumbai have already started waterlogging, disrupting traffic. Meanwhile, at Sinhagad — a popular weekend getaway near Pune — falling debris on the fort’s stepped pathway has prompted authorities to issue a safety advisory for visitors.
What’s Happening In Mumbai Right Now?
Mumbai has seen continuous rain through the night, with western suburbs bearing the brunt on Saturday morning. Andheri’s Veera Desai Road is completely waterlogged, with garbage floating in the accumulated water due to nearby debris. Nalasopara East’s Rajnagar area has also reported heavy rain, with low-lying stretches near Bhavani Park and Dubai Medical College waterlogged as usual, causing traffic disruption.
Why Has A Red Alert Been Issued?
The IMD has flagged the next three hours as particularly dangerous for Mumbai and its neighbouring areas. While the city’s situation remains under control for now, authorities warn that a bigger spell of intense rain is expected to hit Mumbai by afternoon.
A red alert is currently in place for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad, while Pune district’s ghat sections have also received a red alert. Buldhana, Akola and Amravati are under an orange alert.
What Happened At Sinhagad Fort?
At Sinhagad — among Pune’s most popular historical and tourist sites — a landslide occurred near the fort’s first gate along the stepped pathway used by visitors. No casualties have been reported, but debris and rocks have obstructed part of the walking route. The landslide is being attributed to the heavy rain currently lashing the fort area.
Is It Safe To Visit Sinhagad This Weekend?
Officials have urged tourists to exercise caution, citing dense fog and slippery paths in addition to the landslide risk. With Sinhagad typically drawing large weekend crowds during monsoon, authorities have advised visitors to either avoid the fort over the next few days or take extra precautions if they do go. Debris on the pathway is currently being cleared, and no major injuries have been reported so far.
What Should Mumbai Residents Planning A Getaway Keep In Mind?
With red alerts active for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Pune’s ghat areas, and a landslide already reported at a popular tourist spot, authorities are urging people to rethink outdoor and hill-station plans this weekend. Those still travelling are advised to follow local administrative guidelines strictly and avoid trekking routes or waterlogged stretches until conditions improve.
