Plantation drives held in city to mark World Environment Day

Ranchi: Plantation drives and awareness campaigns were held in Ranchi and across the state as govt establishments, private firms and institutes observed World Environment Day (WED) on Friday.The state forest department organised a workshop with knowledge-sharing sessions, interactive discussions and cultural performances aimed at promoting environmental conservation.

Officials said the department plans to plant 1.5 crore saplings statewide.Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar planted a sapling at Lok Bhawan and appealed to the citizens to take plantation drives. Urging the people to sensitive towards nature, Gangwar said, “Environmental conservation should not be limited to a single day but should take the form of a mass movement, for which every individual should make an active contribution at their own level.”The Ranchi Municipal Corporation organised a plantation drive at Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium. Street plays and flute session were held to spread awareness among the people. At Central Mine Planning and Designing Institute in Kanke, chairman-cum-managing director Chaudhari Shivraj Singh administered a pledge to the employees of the PSU and led a plantation drive. Plantation drive was also held at Jharkhand Jaguar premises in Tendergram.

“Lakhs of saplings have been planted over 18 years on the premises, due to which the campus has become greener. Groundwater level also increased,” IG Anoop Birthare said.
