The Bihar government has announced a strict crackdown on the playing of obscene and double-meaning songs in public places and vehicles, warning of legal action, including fines and imprisonment, for violators.
Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Samrat Choudhary has issued firm directions to the police headquarters, instructing officers across all districts to immediately stop the playing of vulgar songs, whether in Bhojpuri, Magahi, Maithili or any other language. He has asked the police to launch special drives to identify offenders and initiate strict legal action against them.
Mr Choudhary said the decision was taken in the interest of social decency and public safety, noting that obscene songs played in public spaces have a deeply negative impact on society, particularly on children. He added that such content not only promotes vulgarity but also undermines women’s safety and dignity. Banning obscene songs, he said, is essential to creating a secure and respectful environment for women.
As part of the move, obscene songs will no longer be permitted in buses, auto-rickshaws, taxis, trains or any other public place. Following the government’s directive, Bihar Police has launched a statewide campaign along with a public appeal under the slogan “No obscene songs, build a civilised society".
The police have clarified that playing obscene or double-meaning songs in public will now be treated as a serious punishable offence. Drivers and vehicle owners found violating the order will face heavy fines and may also be sent to jail.
Under the new enforcement measures, police will register cases under Sections 296 and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with other applicable provisions. Citizens have been urged to oppose such acts and report violations to the nearest police station.
The state government has emphasised that public participation is crucial to eliminating obscenity from public life. Bihar Police, appealing to citizens, said a civilised and safe society can be achieved not only through strict laws but also through collective responsibility and cooperation.
