Sha’Carri Richardson turned her 2026 debut into a spectacle, chasing down the field from scratch at the Stawell Gift and cruising to a dominant heat win with ease.

It was supposed to be a tune-up. Instead, Sha’Carri Richardson turned her first outing of 2026 into a statement and a spectacle at the iconic Stawell Gift.
Held annually at Central Park in Victoria, the Stawell Gift is no ordinary sprint. The historic 120m handicap race — Australia’s oldest of its kind — flips conventional racing on its head, giving slower runners up to a 10-metre head start.
For Richardson, the reigning Olympic silver medallist, that meant starting from scratch and chasing.
A lot of chasing.
From ‘glorified practice’ to full-throttle chase
Richardson had downplayed the event as “glorified practice" in the build-up. But once the gun went off, it quickly turned into something far more engaging.
With half the field starting 10 metres ahead and even the closest rival enjoying a seven-metre cushion, Richardson found herself in a rare position: hunting down the field rather than leading it.
She did exactly that.
Within 70 metres, the American had reeled in every competitor. And with the race effectively won, she eased off dramatically over the final stretch, jogging through the line in 13.82 seconds.
‘Like Being A Kid Again’
For Richardson, the experience was less about the clock and more about reconnecting with the joy of racing.
“It felt like being a kid again, playing tag. Like playing rabbit," she said.
“I had a great time… it just kind of woke my body up."
The unusual format, she admitted, forced her to engage different race instincts — chasing, reacting, adjusting — rather than executing a standard sprint pattern.
“Chasing everyone actually made me activate and work on my race pattern. So it was a good first race."
Only two women, Melissa Breen (2012) and Bree Rizzo (2025), have ever won the Stawell Gift from scratch. Richardson is now firmly in contention to become the third.
