New Delhi: A 35-year-old plumber died after falling from the second floor of a residential building while carrying out repair work in Dwarka on Monday.Police said he was not wearing a helmet and registered a case of ‘death due to negligence’.
They are investigating whether other safety measures were in place at the site.Gurdev, a resident of Sureti village in Bihar’s Purnia district, was tasked with carrying out repair and maintenance work at Rosewood Apartments in Sector 13 of Dwarka when he reportedly slipped from a height of 15 to 20 feet.Police were alerted of the accident once Gurdev was admitted to Indira Gandhi Hospital in Sector 9. He was brought to the casualty ward in an unconscious and unresponsive condition before being referred to Safdarjung Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.Police said Gurdev had been working on the exterior of the four-storey building and was cutting a pipe fixed along the outer wall on the second floor. Instead of a proper safety harness, the plumber was held by two men and had a rope tied around him. When he allegedly lost his balance and slipped, he fell to the ground, sustaining grievous injuries.Police registered a case under Sections 290 (negligent conduct with respect to pulling down, repairing or constructing buildings, etc.)
and 106 (death due to negligence) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).Cops are examining the circumstances under which the work was being carried out and whether mandatory safety protocols were ignored. They are also looking into the responsibility of those supervising the repair work and whether any lapse in workplace safety contributed to the fatal accident. Cops said the contractor he was working under was a relative of his.Gurdev is survived by his wife and four children and was the sole breadwinner of his family.In a separate incident, a 25-year-old woman was electrocuted while working at an under-construction house in north-west Delhi’s Tri Nagar on Tuesday. Sangeeta, a resident of Zakira who is survived by a seven-month-old baby, was rushed to Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. A case under Sections 290 and 106 of BNS was registered at Keshav Puram police station.
