PM lauds NU for reviving ancient tradition of ‘Shaastraarth’

PM Narendra Modi had inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University in Rajgir two years ago

Patna: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised Nalanda University for reviving India’s thousands-of-years-old tradition of ‘Shaastraarth’ (scholarly debate), saying the institution has successfully blended the country’s ancient knowledge systems with modern education and cutting-edge technology.Addressing the 135th episode of his monthly radio programme ‘Mann ki Baat’, Modi said the university had set an example by reconnecting students with India’s intellectual heritage while preparing them for the future.Referring to the rapid global advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and technology, Modi said one of the biggest challenges of the present era is preserving human creativity while embracing innovation.“This is the age of technology. New research is taking place every day. Ever new AI innovations are coming up. In such times, a crucial question arises: How can we preserve people’s creativity? How do we remain connected to our roots while advancing with new technology?” he asked.Modi said Nalanda University has found the answer by combining India’s civilisational roots with contemporary learning practices. Recalling his inauguration of the university’s new campus in Rajgir two years ago, he said, “Our thousands-of-years-old Nalanda University is now shaping India’s destiny in a new avatar.”

“Two years ago, I had the opportunity to dedicate the new campus of Nalanda University to the people. Nalanda University has revived our ancient tradition of ‘Shaastraarth’,” he said.Explaining the significance of the tradition, Modi said, “Shaastraarth is not merely a medium for expressing one’s views; it is a highly disciplined process of debate, dialogue and intellectual brainstorming.”“It requires articulating one’s position backed by logic and facts.

It demands mastery in the particular subject. This process also teaches us to listen to and understand the views of others with patience. I am pleased that Nalanda University has incorporated this (Shaastraarth) into its convocation ceremony. Nearly half of the participating students came from other countries,” he said.“This effort to bridge an ancient tradition with contemporary times is highly commendable.

I extend my heartiest congratulations to Nalanda University for this initiative,” Modi said.Concluding his remarks, the Prime Minister urged higher educational institutions across the country to consider adopting similar initiatives to ensure students remain connected to their cultural roots. The university said it organised extensive Shaastraartha sessions during its convocation ceremony across 25 thematic areas, including ecology, sustainable development and technology, with the participation of 200 students. More than half of the participants were international students from different countries, reflecting the university’s global character and international standing.
