New Delhi: On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital, during his European visit. On his visit, he will hold significant meetings with Slovak president, Peter Pellegrini and premier, Robert Fico. The purpose of the visit is to further enhance the co-operation between India and Slovakia in trade, technology, investment and innovation sectors among other areas.

The event is historic due to the fact that for the first time an Indian Prime Minister visited Slovakia since the country became independent back in 1993. The visit underscores India’s efforts to better engage with European countries and expand economic and security ties in the region. PM Modi will discuss in detail with President Pellegrini and Prime Minister Fico on nurturing mutual cooperation between the two nations. The leaders will probably speak of trades, technological exchange, investments and other areas of common interest.

Modi will interact with some of the top Slovak businessmen apart from holding political meetings. They will be mainly centered on a joint search of new fields for business dialogue and investment possibilities between India and Slovakia. The two countries have openness to building economic collaborations and new opportunity points for growth.

Prior to the visit to Slovakia, PM Modi met with French President Emanuel Macron in France and attended various diplomatic events with the French. He has, in addition, a general tour of Europe, as global leaders will be attending the G7 Summit, where big issues including economic growth, technology, global security and climate change will be discussed. In advance of his visit, Modi stated that it would be an opportunity to strengthen India-Slovakia ties and chart new fields of cooperation. He expressed the need to deepen cooperation with the European Union nations in economic growth, innovation and world cooperation.

The trip is also viewed as a continuation of enhanced bilateral interaction which both countries have been actively stepping up. In recent years, there has been growing number of diplomatic contacts between both countries, such as visit by high-ranking leaders and officials. The recent talks have the potential to pave the way for further partnership within the fields of education, renewable energy, digital technology, manufacturing, and more.

PM Modi will have a follow-on meeting with the Slovak prime minister, which will likely further bolster bilateral ties and pave the way for setting the course for further cooperation between the two nations in the coming years.
