Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached a historic milestone on Sunday as he has become the longest-serving head of government in India, surpassing the record held by former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling.
Pawan Kumar Chamling had served for 8,930 days as Chief Minister, while Narendra Modi has now completed 8,931 days in public office as head of government. This includes his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister as well as his duration as Prime Minister.
The milestone marks a significant moment in Indian politics, highlighting PM Modi’s long and continuous leadership over the years.
PM Modi has held several distinctions during his political career. He became Gujarat Chief Minister in 2001 and remained in the office before taking over as Prime Minister in 2014. He is the longest-serving Chief Minister of Gujarat and the Prime Minister with the most prior experience as a Chief Minister. He is also the first Prime Minister born after India’s Independence.
The Gujarat-born leader is also the only non-Congress leader to complete two full terms as the head of the central government.
He has led his party to victory in three consecutive Lok Sabha elections — 2014, 2019 and 2024 — further strengthening his position in national politics.
Last year in July, he surpassed former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to become the second-longest-serving Prime Minister of India in consecutive terms.
He had completed 4,078 days in office on July 25, 2025. Former PM Indira Gandhi was in the office in an unbroken stint for 4,077 days, from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977.
The record for the unbroken stint is held by India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Narendra Modi has matched Nehru in leading their respective parties to victory in three consecutive Lok Sabha elections.
As an elected head of a government, in state and at the Centre, PM Modi already enjoys the longest stint.
Born into a modest family in Vadnagar, Gujarat, PM Modi helped his father sell tea at a railway station before rising through the ranks of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and later the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Known for his grassroots connect and strong communication style, PM Modi served as Gujarat’s Chief Minister for over a decade before leading the BJP to a historic national victory in 2014. Since then, he has positioned himself as a key global leader, projecting India as a confident, assertive voice on the world stage.
