Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a dialogue with students across the country on Friday, just before the commencement of board exams, through his signature programme, ‘Pariksha Pe Charcha’.
Throughout the session, the Prime Minister didn’t just offer excellent tips on studies and exams; he also imparted lessons on the things to focus on. The PM’s endeavour is to guide the new generation in the right direction through the medium of exams.
While the Prime Minister is often seen meeting domestic and foreign dignitaries on the lawns of his official residence at Lok Kalyan Marg, today was different. During the broadcast of ‘Pariksha Pe Charcha’, millions of students and their families saw him not with celebrities, but schoolchildren from various corners of India.
For over an hour, Modi interacted with these students, with a deeply engrossing conversation. Although the theme was “exams", he guided them on several significant life matters in a lighthearted manner. The tone of the conversation was reminiscent of a family guardian explaining things to children in a friendly, approachable way.
Modi’s mastery of communication is well-established by his success in public life over the past five decades. Through his unique style, he won the trust of Gujarat and, since 2014, the entire nation, as he enters the 25th year of his administrative journey.
However, his priority extends beyond staying in power or making India an economic superpower; it includes character building (Sanskar Sinchan) and preparing the youth, the TV and mobile phone viewers felt. The ninth edition of the programme was more practical and experience than previous versions. It was a confidence-booster for teenagers and also inclusive, as seen when Modi walked alongside a specially-abled student or through the participation of students from various parts of the country.
The dialogue also served as a cultural lesson. Students were seen wearing the Gamcha, a symbol of cultural identity and respect from the Northeast, including Assam. Once a region suffering from neglect, Modi has brought the Northeast into the mainstream over the past twelve years — not just economically, but through culture, dialogue, and communication. Seeing this garment on teenagers was a subtle effort by the PM to instill a sense of national unity.
During the interaction, Modi appeared completely at ease among the children. They hardly felt they were speaking to the Prime Minister of India—a leader with a strong global identity, long-standing popularity, and whose words are listened to carefully across the world.
PM Modi listened attentively to the children and responded to their questions in a unique style. From their expressions, it was clear how easily they were understanding him. While discussing examinations, Modi also spoke on pressing national issues, particularly those affecting adolescents and youth.
Referencing a tragic incident in Ghaziabad where girls lost their lives due to gaming-related issues, he advised, “Look at gaming as a skill. Don’t avoid games, but view them as a skill to be learned. Say no to gambling and betting under the guise of gaming as it can ruin both individuals as well as their families."
While interacting with children, Prime Minister Modi did not leave out the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI is being discussed across the world—its impact, its scale, and how much it will change the world. Instead of instilling fear or anxiety about shrinking opportunities, Modi explained how children can use AI to make not only their studies but also their work easier.
On issues such as how to maintain focus during exams, whether marks or skills matter more, how to score well in pre-boards, or how to cover unfinished syllabus portions, Modi guided students and also offered lessons to teachers. He said teachers should stay just one step ahead of students — if they move fifty steps ahead, students will be left behind.
Students of Class 12, especially those preparing for engineering or medical entrance exams, often struggle with deciding priorities. Modi’s clear advice was: First focus on board examinations, then worry about competitive exams. If board preparation is strong, competitive exams become easier. Modi has guided students on such dilemmas before as well, and even authored a book on the subject titled Exam Warriors.
Clearly, whether through direct interaction or through his book, these tips are coming from someone who has not only won elections in the world’s largest democracy, but has also won a place in people’s hearts. Modi himself is a source of inspiration for millions of children from underprivileged and poor families.
Born into a poor family in the small town of Vadnagar in Gujarat’s Mehsana district, Modi achieved success through focus on goals, extreme hard work, and relentless effort—success acknowledged by the world. Therefore, when Modi advises students to adopt these values, they trust him and remember his teachings.
Modi often says that he dreams with open eyes, which is why his dreams turn into reality. He expects the same from the new generation, so that the dream of a Developed India by 2047 can become a reality. During his interaction with students, he said that not dreaming is a crime—but merely humming dreams while staying in the comfort zone will not work. To turn dreams into reality, one must work hard and maintain momentum.
Modi has great expectations from millions of adolescents and youth. He knows that if they resolve to achieve something, they can accomplish any goal. That is why, under the pretext of discussing exams, he is engaging with them on life and society—so that India’s new generation can channel its immense energy toward achieving big goals and taking the country to new heights.
