Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Malaysian counterpart Anwar Ibrahim on Friday highlighted the strong cultural and social bonds between their countries as they headed to a major diaspora programme in Kuala Lumpur during Modi’s official visit to Malaysia.

In a social media post on X, Modi said he was “celebrating the India-Malaysia people-to-people connect" as he and Anwar travelled together to the event. The reception, titled ‘Selamat Datang Modi Ji’, is expected to draw thousands of members of the Indian diaspora, one of the largest overseas communities in Malaysia, and showcases the deep cultural ties between the two nations.

Modi is on a two-day official visit to Malaysia at Anwar’s invitation, aimed at further strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership elevated between the two countries in 2024. Modi’s third visit to Malaysia focuses on enhancing cooperation across a wide range of areas, including trade, defence, security, technology and innovation, as well as deepening engagement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Officials say Modi will also hold bilateral talks with Anwar to review progress under the strategic partnership and explore new avenues for economic collaboration, including semiconductor and emerging technology cooperation. Preparations for the visit have generated excitement among the Indian diaspora in Kuala Lumpur, with cultural performances and community celebrations planned as part of the agenda.

The Malaysian visit underscores India’s broader diplomatic engagement in Southeast Asia and reflects the longstanding historical, cultural and economic links between the two countries.

PM Modi has made similar car rides with global leaders such as Putin of Russia, Mohammad Bin Zayed of UAE and the crown prince of Jordan.
