PM Modi to inaugurate new metro stretches in Kolkata today

On Friday, August 22, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate three vital new sections of the Kolkata Metro at approximately 4:15 PM. The stretches include Sealdah to Esplanade, Noapara to Jai Hind Bimanbandar (Airport), and Hemanta Mukhopadhyay to Beleghata (IT hub).

Together, these additions span around 13.6 km, marking the most substantial expansion of the metro system to date—enhancing connectivity to the airport, easing commutes between major city centers, and improving access to key tech zones.

The East–West (Green) Line’s completion enables full travel from Sector V to Howrah Maidan, while the Yellow and Orange Lines inaugurate the city’s first direct airport metro link and bolster outreach to burgeoning commercial districts. This milestone is set to significantly reduce travel time, ease congestion, and strengthen Kolkata’s public transit network ahead of the festive season.
