The impact of the ongoing tensions in West Asia on regional economies, diplomacy, and shifting geopolitical alignments will dominate discussions at a three-day Heads of Mission (HOM) conference in New Delhi from April 28 to 30. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to join the deliberations on the final day.
The meeting, to be attended by India’s envoys from across the world, will begin with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri outlining the global situation, with particular emphasis on the crisis in West Asia and the economic fallout from disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Hormuz Disruption Rattles Global Markets
With both the US and Iran seeking control over the Strait of Hormuz, global trade—especially for Gulf nations—has taken a major hit, as very few cargo ships or oil tankers are able to pass through. Before the February 28 conflict, over 130 vessels crossed the critical maritime route daily, but traffic has since dropped sharply. Iran is now using the route as leverage against the US and regional players, leaving other countries caught in the fallout, even as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) plans to impose a $2 million toll per vessel.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has ordered the US Navy to “shoot and kill" any Iranian boat laying mines in the strategic waterway, a move that could jeopardise the fragile ceasefire between the two countries.
EAM Jaishankar To Brief Envoys On Day 2
On the second day, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will brief envoys on the evolving global order shaped by conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine, as well as China’s growing influence in East Asia. On the same day, Chief of Defence Staff Anil Chauhan will present an assessment of regional military capabilities and ongoing reforms in India’s defence structure, Hindustan Times reported.
The final day will feature an address by Prime Minister Modi, alongside inputs from National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval on security priorities. Discussions are also expected to touch on Pakistan’s diplomatic positioning in the region and its defence engagements with Gulf countries.
The conference comes amid indications that the government may appoint non-career diplomats to key postings, with an emphasis on projecting India’s strategic interests more assertively in critical regions.
