Two drug peddlers were arrested by Ranipet district police at Walajah Road railway station in Ranipet on Wednesday for possession of 35 kg of ganja from Odisha to the district.

The arrested persons were identified as K. Narayanan (36), V. Nayak (37) R. Mithun (33). All of them belong to Odisha. Initial inquiry revealed that, based on orders of Asra Garg, IGP (North Zone), special teams were formed as part of a crackdown on drug trafficking.

Following an alert, special police teams were conducting surprise vehicle checks around public places when they saw the trio loitering at the railway station in a suspicious way. When questioned, the trio gave contradictory answers on their purpose of travel and later confessed that they were waiting to upload ganja consignment to Chennai by train. Subsequently, police checked their jute bags and found ganja.

Walajah police registered a case and lodged them at the Central Prison in Vellore. It was found that the seized ganja was meant to sell in retail among workers in industrial sites in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Puducherry. A probe is underway.
