Political tensions rise in Kerala’s Payyannur as motorcycle linked to V. Kunhikrishnan’s supporter set ablaze amid protests

Tensions escalated in Payyannur, Kannur, Kerala, after a motorcycle allegedly belonging to a supporter of former CPI(M) leader V. Kunhikrishnan was set on fire late Monday night.

The incident comes a day after Mr. Kunhikrishnan was expelled from the party over allegations related to irregularities in martyrs’ fund.

The motorcycle, owned by Prasannan of Vellur, was reportedly taken from the courtyard of his house to a nearby paddy field and torched. Prasannan is said to have participated in a protest in support of Mr. Kunhikrishnan following his expulsion.

Meanwhile, the CPI(M) is set to hold ‘a political explanation’ meeting in Payyannur on Tuesday in connection with the action taken against Mr. Kunhikrishnan. The meeting, scheduled for 7 pm, is expected to be attended by the branch, local and area committees under the Payyannur area committee. State and district level leaders are also expected to address the gathering.

Following Mr. Kunhikrishnan ‘s expulsion, CPI(M) workers had staged a protest in front of his residence, bursting firecrackers. Mr. Kunhikrishnan was not home at the time of the protest. Later in the day, a set of people also came forward supporting him and his stance against the party.
