A portion of the portico canopy at the Bihar Assembly building collapsed on Friday morning, triggering safety concerns ahead of a major official event scheduled at the complex tomorrow.

According to officials, the incident occurred early in the day when the Assembly premises were largely empty, preventing any injuries or casualties. Debris from the damaged canopy fell near the entrance area, but no one was present at the spot at the time.

The collapse has drawn attention as it came just a day before the Bihar Assembly's Foundation Day event, a high-profile programme slated for Saturday. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju are expected to attend the event, prompting questions over infrastructure safety at the venue.

The matter was also raised inside the House by RJD MLA Kumar Sarvjeet, who said that if legislators had been standing under the portico, the incident could have led to serious injuries. He told Speaker Prem Kumar that falling debris narrowly missed members.

Responding to the concern, Speaker Prem Kumar assured the House that the issue would be examined and necessary action taken.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was present in the Assembly when the issue was flagged. Authorities are expected to inspect the damaged structure and carry out repairs before the scheduled programme.
