A couple was arrested by the Guwahati police for allegedly posing as household workers and robbing several families in the city. The accused first gained the trust of families by posing as domestic help and later stole cash and jewellery from their houses.
The modus operandi of the accused has triggered panic among residents over hiring house help. The couple used fake names and addresses to gain entry into homes before robbing the families, NDTV reported, citing the police.
The robbery cases came to light from multiple areas of the city, including Noonmati, Fancy Bazar, Birubari, and Basistha.
Stayed At House, Won Trust, And Robbed
A police official said an accused — identified as Dipali Das — was working as a domestic help at a house in Fancy Bazar area. “After staying there for few months and winning trust, she broke open an almirah and run away with gold jewellery," said the official, as quoted by NDTV.
Another accused — identified as Bhupen Kumar Singh — was detained from Pamohi. “Based on his confession, we have apprehended Dipali Das, alias Jonali," added the official.
The stolen jewellery had been sold at a shop in exchange for Rs 3 lakh, said the police, adding the shop owner, Bharat Sonar, was also held from Burnihat.
