Senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Praful Patel may not have been removed from his role as the party’s national working president, as Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar has issued a clarification over the same.

Hours after documents on the Election Commission website confirmed changes in the party’s national executive on Monday, Sunetra Pawar, in an X post, wrote, “A list of office bearers of the NCP circulating in the media has a clerical mistake and will be corrected soon."

While Patel remains part of the 22-member national committee, his designation was believed to have been removed — a signal that his authority within the organisation may have been curtailed.

The development follows weeks of speculation within the party after Sunetra Pawar was appointed national president in February. In a letter submitted to the Election Commission on March 10, the party listed the names of Patel and Maharashtra unit chief Sunil Tatkare without mentioning any posts beside them. The omission triggered political chatter, though the party leadership did not offer any public clarification.

Political circles were already abuzz with reports of a power struggle involving Patel, Tatkare and Parth Pawar.

The latest organisational reshuffle also underlines the growing influence of the younger Pawar leadership within the party. Parth Pawar and Subodh Mohite have been appointed national general secretaries, while Jay Pawar and several others have been accommodated as national secretaries.

Meanwhile, uncertainty still remains over Tatkare’s future as Maharashtra NCP president.
