Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday took a veiled swipe at Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh during his address in the Rajya Sabha, making pointed remarks that the Opposition lawmaker later described as a “personal and political attack."
Without naming Singh directly, the Prime Minister referred to allegations surrounding him, saying some people “prefer the word ‘black’ more," an apparent reference to past controversies linked to him.
PM Modi also took aim at the AAP, saying its government in Delhi had “drowned in liquor" and built a “sheeshmahal that became a symbol of public anger", leaving it with no moral right to lecture others.
“Everyone has a past," PM Modi said, adding that he did not know what “connections" some leaders had with the word “black," remarks widely interpreted by the BJP leaders as a reference to Sanjay Singh.
The BJP has repeatedly accused Singh of selling party tickets “in black" during his early days, an allegation the Rajya Sabha MP has consistently denied.
Sanjay Singh Hits Back
Responding sharply, Sanjay Singh accused the Prime Minister of lashing out due to frustration. “Today, the Prime Minister attacked me, Arvind Kejriwal and our party aggressively in Parliament. This shows their frustration," Singh said.
The AAP MP claimed PM Modi was rattled because he had sought answers in Parliament on the Epstein files. “What is in the Epstein files that has the Prime Minister so unsettled?" Singh asked, alleging that this was the reason the government “bows before Trump."
Escalating his attack, Singh said the AAP would not allow the government to compromise India’s interests. “We will not let you sell India to America like this, even if you send me to jail again," he said.
The Prime Minister’s speech in the Upper House came a day after he was unable to deliver his address in the Lok Sabha due to sustained Opposition protests.
The session witnessed dramatic scenes, with women MPs from Opposition parties blocking seats on the treasury benches, including the Prime Minister’s chair. PM Modi was not present in the House at the time.
The BJP later described the protest as an attempted attack on the Prime Minister, further escalating tensions between the government and the Opposition as Parliament continues to witness sharp confrontations.
