Prehistoric artefacts, V’nagara relics unearthed in Hosapete village

A Kannada inscription with Telugu influences dating to the reign of Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagara Empire, discovered by researchers on the bedrock of the Dharmasagar tank

Hosapete (Vijayanagara): Researchers discovered evidence of a prehistoric human habitation and several Vijayanagara-era relics at Dharmasagar village in Hosapete taluk, shedding fresh light on the region’s archaeological heritage. The finds were made during a field survey by the Vijayanagar Tirugata research team, led by Prof Tippeswamy, Govind and Krishnegowda, with support from residents.Among the key discoveries were polished stone axes believed to have been used by prehistoric humans and the foundation of an ancient settlement. The team also documented a rare black rock formation resembling natural steps on a hill slope, which experts identified as a dolerite dyke.Locals call the formation ‘Karekallu Magani’ and believe the rocks turned black after Lord Rama and Lakshmana walked over them.Researchers also discovered a Kannada inscription with Telugu influences dating to the reign of Krishnadevaraya on the bedrock of a large village tank. They said the inscription reflected the linguistic harmony of the Vijayanagara Empire. At nearby Bailu Vaddigere, the team unearthed an unpublished inscription from the reign of Immadi Devaraya. On the outskirts of Dharmasagar, they also documented a unique ‘Lingagala Gudi’ comprising 101 spherical stone lingas attached to a wall, where special prayers are offered every year on Mahashivaratri.Members of the research team said the discoveries point to continuous human activity in the area from prehistoric times to the Vijayanagara period, underscoring Dharmasagar’s archaeological importance.
