The mysterious death of Rajasthan’s well-known storyteller Sadhvi Prem Baisa continues to raise questions, with investigators yet to establish a clear cause even six days after the incident. Police have been probing the case since January 28, but no individual has been ruled out so far. The initial postmortem report failed to determine the cause of death, and authorities are now awaiting the viscera examination report from the forensic science laboratory (FSL).

Prem Baisa’s father, Birmanath, has made several statements regarding the ongoing investigation, asserting that the ashram has remained under police control since the night of January 28. He said he was not present when the FSL team visited the ashram for the second time, as the premises had already been sealed by the police. Birmanath claimed he had no information about any evidence collected during the second visit and declined to comment further, stating that only the police could provide accurate details as investigative agencies have been monitoring the ashram from the beginning.

Birmanath also spoke about the circumstances surrounding his daughter’s death, stating that after she was administered an injection, she did not vomit but began sneezing and soon experienced breathing difficulties. He added that after her death, her nails turned blue, though he did not notice any other unusual physical changes. The family has reiterated its demand for a transparent and fair investigation, as the absence of conclusive medical findings and conflicting accounts continue to cloud the case.

Tensions have meanwhile surfaced within the saint community, with divisions emerging over Birmanath’s role. While some saints have levelled allegations against him, others have come out in his defence. A large number of devotees gathered at Prem Baisa’s memorial site in Pareu village of Balotra district to offer prayers, with many openly questioning the circumstances of her death.

At a condolence meeting, Mahant Jagdishpuri of Chauhatan Math in Barmer said the controversy could have been avoided had the postmortem been conducted immediately. However, he maintained that Birmanath acted with patience and followed the correct process, adding that clarity would emerge soon. Birmanath’s guru, Motnath, also rejected claims that the family opposed a postmortem, stating that Birmanath had only sought to ensure the procedure was conducted in the presence of saints.

Jagdishpuri further remarked that Birmanath’s social media statements may have contributed to tensions, though his intentions were not malicious. According to him, Birmanath had undertaken a vow to abstain from food until justice was delivered for his daughter, a fast that was later broken with milk at the insistence of fellow saints. Birmanath has also denied allegations that he delayed the postmortem, saying he merely wanted the body kept at the ashram briefly before being taken to the hospital, and claimed that opponents deliberately created hurdles.

Rejecting speculation about tampering with evidence, Birmanath denied ordering the removal of CCTV cameras, asserting that no cameras had ever been installed at the ashram. He also dismissed the possibility of poisoning, stating that the food was prepared by the ashram servant, Suresh, and consumed by everyone present, making poisoning unlikely.

Questions have also been raised over the pace of the police investigation. Sources said that when the police and FSL team visited the ashram for the second time, the premises appeared clean, with no apparent evidence recovered. This has led to fresh doubts over whether the scene may have been disturbed, despite claims that the ashram was sealed. Police have recorded the statement of Suresh, but several aspects of the case remain unresolved.

Investigators are also examining discrepancies in the reported time of Prem Baisa’s death, with differing accounts emerging from her father, the compounder, and hospital authorities. Birmanath has yet to provide passwords for three seized mobile phones, including two iPhones. Meanwhile, the viscera samples have finally been sent for forensic examination.

As the investigation continues, no formal charges have been framed, and the cause of death remains undetermined. With divisions deepening within the saint community and devotees demanding answers, all eyes are now on the FSL report, which is expected to play a crucial role in determining what truly led to Sadhvi Prem Baisa’s death.
