The Prince of Arcot Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, on Wednesday appealed to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to appoint a new Chief Kazi to the State government following the recent death of incumbent Mufti Salahuddin Mohammed Ayub.
Highlighting the community’s concern, Mr. Ali said the absence of a Chief Kazi for the past three months has caused considerable difficulties for the Muslim community. The role of the Chief Kazi is of vital importance, as it involves solemnising marriages, issuing fatwas and carrying out various responsibilities connected with Islamic Shariah.
Traditionally, the position of Chief Kazi has been held within the same family since its inception and that Maulana Mohammed Akbar, son-in-law of the late Chief Kazi, had been trained and prepared in all aspects of Islamic Shariah, makes him well qualified to assume the role.
Mr. Ali urged the Chief Minister to appoint Maulana Mohammed Akbar as the Chief Kazi of the State government at the earliest, in the interest of the community and the continuity of this important office.
