Air India crash report: Pilots' Association objects to initial report

Investigation into the Air India-171 plane crash is being done presuming that the pilots were at fault, Pilots’ Association of India alleged on Saturday, responding to the initial report published by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), which was made public today.

The association expressed surprise over the “secrecy" behind the investigation into the incident and underlined that “suitably qualified personnel are not taken on board" for the probe.

In a strong-worded statement, the association pointed to the Wall Street Journal article, which claimed that the investigation has now zeroed in on the movement of the engine fuel control switches – something which was ultimately designated as the cause of the crash in the AAIB report.

The report also cited brief conversation between the two pilots operating the flight, in which one is heard asking the other, “Why did you cut off?" The other pilot was quoted as saying in the report: “I did not do so."

The association objected to the report, seemingly suggesting a dual-engine shutdown due to the movement of fuel cutoff switches midair.

“We feel that the investigation is being driven in a direction presuming the guilt of pilots and we strongly object to this line of thought," a statement released by the association said.
