Delhi University’s assistant professor Debosmita Paul was found dead inside her apartment on Thursday.

Three days after a Delhi University Assistant Professor, Debosmita Paul, was found dead at her apartment in Vasundhara Enclave, the Delhi Police have cracked the murder case and arrested a family of three from West Bengal.

The arrested individuals include a husband, wife, and their minor son. Investigators say the crime was linked to a property dispute. The accused couple has been identified as Ramprashad Das (42) and Banashree Das (36), residents of Kalna Road, Near Arvinda Stadium, Burdwan, West Bengal. Their minor son has been apprehended under Juvenile Justice provisions.

What Was The Motive?

According to police, the accused family had been living since 2023 in the professor’s ancestral property in Burdwan, West Bengal. The property had reportedly been allotted to the victim through a family settlement. Police said the professor had repeatedly asked the family to vacate the premises and had recently issued a final warning, triggering tensions which ultimately led to her murder.

How Was The Crime Allegedly Planned?

Investigators claim the accused travelled from Burdwan to Delhi on June 3 with the intention of killing her. After the crime, they allegedly fled using a taxi before reaching New Delhi Railway Station and boarding the Poorva Express back to West Bengal.

How Did Police Track Them Down?

The breakthrough came through extensive analysis of CCTV footage from the crime scene and surrounding areas. Police said the suspects were seen changing clothes, concealing their faces and moving through the building using stairs and lifts.

Investigators later traced the trio to a guest house in Delhi where they had stayed before the murder. Police allege the accused used Aadhaar details belonging to unrelated individuals to hide their identities.

Arrests And Recoveries

A Delhi Police team travelled to Burdwan on June 6 and followed the suspects’ movements from the railway station to their hideout. All three were apprehended on June 7, they said.

Police said they recovered the victim’s mobile phone, a razor allegedly used in the crime, clothing and travel documents. The accused are being brought to Delhi on transit remand, while further investigation is underway.
