Residents of ward 1 in the Uzhavoor panchayat staged a massive protest on Saturday, demanding the immediate closure of a plywood factory in their vicinity.
Organised under the banner of the Monippally Plywood Factory People’s Action Council, the protest drew a large number of local residents, including women and children, who carried placards and raised slogans. The procession began near Achikkal Harijan Colony along the M.C. Road and proceeded about one km to the factory site at Meempanthanam, culminating in a demonstration in front of the main gate.
Kaduthuruthy MLA Mons Joseph inaugurated the protest. Residents highlighted potential health hazards and the adverse impact of the factory on agriculture in the densely populated agrarian region. Betty Johny, representing the action council, presented the protest resolution. Elected representatives from Uzhavoor and Elanji panchayats also addressed the gathering.
The march was flagged off by Father Jose Tharappel, Vicar of Udayagiri Church.
