Protest to relocate Tasmac outlet

Trichy: Residents of Thiruvanaikovil protested on Friday demanding closure of a Tasmac outlet near the number one tollgate, alleging its proximity to schools, govt offices and commercial establishments was causing safety and social problems in the area.A large number of residents from Alagiri Puram laid siege to the shop, insisting it be removed immediately. They pointed out that the outlet is situated near govt girls as well as boys higher secondary schools, RTO office and several shops.Customers often consume alcohol near the outlet and drive recklessly on the busy road, causing accidents and endangering pedestrians and students, they said. Women said some residents consumed liquor frequently causing domestic disputes. Srirangam police and other officials held talks with the protesters, while excise officials assured residents they would examine the possibility of relocating the outlet.
