PSI injured in a freak accident succumbs; two suspects who fled custody in melee and truck driver still at large

A police sub-inspector (PSI) attached to Talaghattapura Police Station who was injured in a freak accident — a speeding truck ran over him while he was on his phone, standing next to his patrolling car parked on the road in Chandapura — on Tuesday, succumbed to his injuries on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Mahboob Guddalli, 40. 

While two constables who accompanied him had a narrow escape, two drug peddlers the team had detained escaped custody, taking advantage of the situation. The truck driver also sped away from the scene. Based on the complaint filed by Tulasidas, head constable and eye witness to the incident, the Surya Nagar police have registered a case against the truck driver and two absconding accused identified as Syed Waseem and Ameer. 

According to the complainant, the incident unfolded when the police, based on a tip-off, caught 19-year-old Faraz Syed Aslam red handed while peddling drugs. Faraz reportedly told the police that he used to source drugs from Syed Waseem, Syed Azhar, and Ameer. Alerted by his team, PSI Mahboob Guddalli, led a team, raided a place in Tilak Nagar and caught the trio in a car.

The police handcuffed the accused and sent Syed Azhar and Faraz Syed Aslam to the station for further investigation, while Mahboob and two constables Sanna Jadeyappa and Tulasidas along with Syed Waseem and Ameer left in the police car towards Attibele to track down other members of the network. 

On the way, a part of the wheel detached and Sana Jadeyappa who was driving the car stopped next to the road median and went to check on the detached part. Mahboob Guddalli got down from the car, while Tulasidas was in the backseat of the car with the two suspects. While Mahboob was on his phone standing behind the car, a speeding truck crashed into the car. Due to the impact, the car moved a few meters away and a shocked Tulasidas jumped out to check. Sensing trouble the truck sped away, while Syed Waseem and Ameer taking advantage of the situation fled. 

The two constables immediately rushed a severely injured Mahboob to a private hospital, where he was being treated in an Intensive Care Unit. He succumbed to his injuries on Saturday. 

Four days after the accident, the police are yet to track down the truck driver and the two suspected drug peddlers who fled custody. Police investigating the case, are also not ruling out the possibility of foul play and are further probing the case.
