Puducherry has been a Union Territory since it merged from French colonial administration into the Indian Union.

Multiple resolutions seeking statehood have passed in the Assembly over the years, reflecting a long-standing political demand across parties.
With voting just days away on April 9, Puducherry’s ruling coalition is showing cracks that could reorder the entire electoral contest. The trigger: Chief Minister N Rangasamy’s All India NR Congress (AINRC) is pushing its NDA partner, the BJP, for something it has wanted for decades — full statehood.
What Is The Demand?
Puducherry has been a Union Territory since it merged from French colonial administration into the Indian Union.
Unlike a full state, its elected government shares power with a Centre-appointed Lieutenant Governor, leaving local legislators repeatedly frustrated.
Multiple resolutions seeking statehood have passed in the Assembly over the years, reflecting a long-standing political demand across parties.
The core argument: statehood would give the elected government the authority to implement policies without constant central oversight.
Why Now?
At the heart of the rift lies NR Congress’s firm stance that it receive an explicit commitment on full statehood from either PM Narendra Modi or Home Minister Amit Shah.
According to ETV Bharat, this is not merely rhetorical. The NR Congress leadership gave the BJP a 24-hour window to respond, and the stalemate is attributed largely to this demand along with a push to exclude a smaller ally from the NDA fold.
The TVK Wildcard
IndiaTV News stated that Rangasamy was reportedly poised to break from NDA and announce a fresh alliance with actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), a move that could upend Puducherry’s electoral equation entirely.
The Paradox
The opposition is seizing on an irony. As Congress leader Mukul Wasnik put it just yesterday, Rangasamy had allied with the BJP in the previous elections precisely with a promise to secure statehood — and is yet to deliver on it.
Despite the turbulence, a pre-poll survey by Peoples Pulse suggests the NDA still holds a narrow but workable advantage — meaning the statehood drama may be more about leverage than rupture. But with five days to go, Puducherry’s small assembly and tight margins leave no room for coalition miscalculation.
