Supply disruptions continue for second day due to civic body repair delays

PUNE: Several parts of Pune continued to face water shortages and supply disruptions for the second consecutive day on Friday, as the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) repair and maintenance work missed its morning deadline due to technical issues.

Residents in many areas reported difficulties due to lack of water supply. The PMC’s water supply department had undertaken around 45 repair and maintenance works during Thursday’s day-long shutdown. Water pumping to overhead storage tanks and distribution was expected to resume by Friday morning. However, corporators from several areas said they received complaints from residents about continued disruption and struggled to manage the situation.

Water tankers were pressed into service to meet demand. Officials said that installation of flow meters and replacement of valves were carried out at major water treatment plants and at the Khadakwasla dam during the shutdown. While work at most locations was completed, seepage issues at the new Parvati water works delayed the installation of flow meters. This affected the restoration of supply to the Peth areas and parts of Kothrud and Aundh.

Officials said supply was expected to resume by Friday afternoon. “The water supply from other water works, including Cantonment, Holkar and Bhama Askhed, was restored around Friday noon. The administration is also lifting water from the Mutha irrigation canal to meet requirements,” officials said.
