Amritpal Singh Mehron, the prime suspect in the murder case of social media influencer Kanchan Kumari, also known as ‘Kamal Kaur Bhabhi’, escaped to the UAE shortly after the incident, police said.

According to Bhatinda Senior Superintendent of Police Amneet Kondal, police had already issued a lookout circular against Mehron, a resident of Moga.

Mehron, 30, is a self-proclaimed Sikh radical leader who faces accusations of issuing threats to at least two other female social media influencers in Punjab, in addition to his alleged involvement in the murder of Kanchan Kumari.

“Different police teams were already looking for Amritpal by conducting raids. On Saturday, we issued a lookout circular. When we got his passport details and checked his travel records and found that he had fled to the UAE after taking a flight from Amritsar in the evening, just hours after the murder was committed in Bathinda," Kondal told reporters in Bathinda.

“We will tie up with other authorities, and we will follow due procedure for his deportation. We have informed the authorities that Mehron is wanted in a murder case," she said.

Kanchan Kumari was found dead in an abandoned car in a parking lot in Bathinda. She was murdered on June 9. A resident of Lachman colony in Ludhiana, Kanchan, was strangled to death. Later on June 13, two accused – Jaspreet Singh (32) of Moga and Nimratjit Singh (21) from Tarn Taran were arrested.

After their arrest, the two arrested men said they had killed Kanchan for uploading “immoral and vulgar content that hurt the community’s sentiments".

In a video, Mehron also warned other influencers creating “objectionable content" to refrain from such activities. Targeting another Punjab-based influencer, he said it is “not necessary that a body will be found every time", as he indirectly referred to Kanchan’s body being left in her car.

On further investigation, it was revealed that two more accused are involved in the murder conspiracy.

According to SSP Kondal, two associates of Mehron, including one identified as Ranjit Singh, have been named as accused in the FIR. Authorities are actively working to apprehend them.

‘Kamal Kaur Bhabhi’ had 384,000 followers on Instagram. She also operated a YouTube channel called ‘Funny Bhabhi TV’, which had 2,36,000 subscribers.

SSP Kondal revealed that investigations exposed a premeditated plan by Mehron, who allegedly orchestrated the murder three months prior. Mehron, along with accomplices Jaspreet and Nimratjit, tracked Kanchan Kumari’s movements, lifestyle, and vehicle.

Mehron called Kanchan to a meeting in Ludhiana under the guise of a car promotion event. On June 9, Kanchan left her home, and Mehron, Jaspreet, and Nimratjit arrived in Ludhiana from Moga. They met Kanchan, and Mehron sat in her car’s backseat while the others followed in their vehicle.

The trio promised Kanchan they’d repair her car in Bathinda. Once there, Mehron switched to his SUV, and Nimratjit accompanied Kanchan to the garage. Mehron then drove Kanchan’s vehicle with all three inside. They snatched her phone, and Nimratjit and Jaspreet allegedly strangled her to death.

Mehron left with another accused in Ranjit’s car, while Jaspreet and Nimratjit abandoned Kanchan’s car with her body at Adesh University.

After realising that they had left the piece of cloth used to strangulate Kanchan behind, they went there again to recover it. Her body was discovered when locals informed the police about a foul smell emanating from a car in the parking area near Adesh University.

The SSP said that following a complaint registered by her mother, Girja Devi, a murder case was registered.
