Punjab schools and colleges to reopen for students from September 9 after flood disruptions

After being shut since August 27 due to heavy rains and widespread flooding, educational institutions across Punjab are set to welcome students back from September 9, 2025. The state government has announced that schools, colleges, and universities — government, private, and aided, will resume normal functioning from that date, provided the campuses are declared safe.On September 8, however, students of government schools will not attend classes. Instead, only teachers and staff will report to duty to carry out a comprehensive cleaning drive and building inspections. These activities will be conducted in collaboration with School Management Committees (SMCs), panchayats, municipal councils, and corporations.Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains shared the official instructions on X, outlining the following key measures:

  • Private school managements must ensure that their classrooms and buildings are completely safe before reopening to students.
  • Teachers have been directed to inspect school buildings thoroughly and immediately inform the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and the Engineering Department if any structural issues are detected.
  • DCs have been authorized to evaluate the condition of schools within their districts. If any institution is severely affected by floods, an extended closure may be recommended.

Safety remains priority amid flood impact

The government stressed that while most institutions will resume as usual, safety remains the top priority.

In areas where flooding has caused major damage, the decision to reopen will rest with the respective DCs.Punjab has been grappling with its worst floods in three decades, triggered by heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. The swollen Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers, along with seasonal rivulets, inundated large parts of the state, while continuous downpours worsened the situation locally. With inspections and cleaning scheduled for September 8, authorities hope to ensure that students can safely return to classrooms on September 9, signaling a gradual step back to normal academic routines.
