Emami Art presented Purvai: Printmaking in Eastern India – Pedagogy to Practice, a landmark group exhibition curated by Dr. Paula Sengupta. Purvai traced the evolution of contemporary printmaking across Eastern India, following its journey from pedagogy to professional practice.
Featuring 44 artists and collectives from the northeastern states, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh, the exhibition offered a comprehensive exploration of the medium’s educational legacy, experimentation, and contemporary relevance. As a collateral project to the 3rd Print Biennial India organised by the Lalit Kala Akademi, the exhibition provided a vital platform for dialogue between tradition and innovation within printmaking.
It highlighted the diverse techniques, materials, and conceptual approaches shaping the region’s printmaking practices today. Through its thoughtfully curated selection, Purvai: Printmaking in Eastern India – Pedagogy to Practice celebrated the enduring vitality of print as both a medium of artistic expression and a site of experimentation, collaboration, and cultural continuity.
