Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday (local time) held a phone call with US President Donald Trump, where he shared multiple suggestions aimed at a quick settlement of the ongoing war in Iran, according to the Kremlin.

Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters that Trump and Putin also discussed the Ukrainian conflict and the situation in Venezuela in the context of the global oil market situation. He described the discussions as productive, professional and frank.

“The accent was placed on the situation surrounding the conflict with Iran and the bilateral negotiations underway with the representatives of the United States on settling the Ukrainian question," Ushakov said.

Putin called for a “quick political and diplomatic settlement" to the US-Israeli war against Iran, which has been a key Russian ally. He also “positively evaluated the mediation efforts undertaken" by Trump in the Ukraine conflict, as per the Kremlin aide.

This came after a series of talks have been held between Russian and US officials and between Russian, US and Ukrainian officials, but with no breakthrough in efforts to reach a ceasefire. Ushakov said the US had wanted to “discuss a series of extremely important questions linked to the current international situation".

Putin Ready To Work With Europe

The talks came after Putin said the Iran war had triggered a global energy crisis and that Russia was ready to work again with European customers if they wanted to return to long-term cooperation. He also warned that oil production dependent on transport through the Strait of Hormuz could soon come to a halt.

“We will continue to supply energy resources to countries that are reliable partners. Russian companies need to take advantage of the current situation," said Putin at a televised meeting with government officials and the heads of Russia’s leading oil and gas producers.

“We’re ready to work with Europeans, but we need some signals from them that they’re ready and willing to work with us and will ensure this sustainability and stability," Putin said. “Oil production linked to the Strait of Hormuz risks coming to complete halt as early as next month."

Oil prices exceeded $100 per barrel on Monday to reach peaks unseen since 2022 as the Strait of Hormuz, which accounts for 20% oil and LNG supplies worldwide. G7 nations said on Monday they were prepared to implement “necessary measures" in response to surging global oil prices, but stopped short of committing to release emergency reserves.
