Qatar on Tuesday said there are no high-level or direct talks scheduled between the United States and Iran in Doha, even as US envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner arrived in the Qatari capital for meetings with mediators and officials on regional issues, including negotiations with Tehran.

“There are currently no high-level meetings between the Iranian and American sides under the approved mechanism for the negotiations," Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari said.

Al Ansari said Witkoff and Kushner were in Doha to meet Qatari officials and mediators, adding that their discussions would cover regional issues, including Iran negotiations and Lebanon, but would not include direct meetings with Iranian officials.

The Qatari Foreign Ministry said technical talks between Iran and the United States were continuing through direct and indirect channels despite the recent escalation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, Qatar has not transferred $6 billion in Iranian frozen funds to Tehran, and Doha was coordinating with Oman on ensuring the safe passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

The remarks of Al Ansari came after President Donald Trump said on Monday that Iran had requested fresh talks in Qatar.

“IT WILL TAKE PLACE TOMORROW IN DOHA!" Trump wrote on social media.

Following the post, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told Fox News that Witkoff and Kushner would travel to Doha for high-level meetings this week.

However, Iran denied that any direct talks with the United States had been scheduled.

“We had not planned any meetings with the American side at any level over the next few days, so there is nothing for us to cancel," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said.

“What is likely to take place in Doha tomorrow is discussions with the Qatari side regarding the implementation of certain provisions of the memorandum of understanding, including the clause concerning the release of Iran’s restricted assets," he said.

“Therefore, I emphasise that no meeting at any level with the American side has been scheduled for the coming days," he added.

Baghaei added that Iran had not yet entered the stage of negotiating a final agreement and that a delegation of experts would travel to Doha later this week for discussions related to the memorandum of understanding rather than direct negotiations with the United States.

Earlier this month, the United States and Iran agreed to an interim memorandum of understanding under which Tehran would dilute its stockpile of enriched uranium.

The agreement also provides for US-backed oil sanctions waivers on Iran, free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, and a 60-day period for both sides to negotiate a broader agreement.
