The Indian Air Force has shown strong confidence in the Rafale fighter jet, with Vice Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor describing it as the “hero of Operation Sindoor, among many other heroes," even as the force pushes for the induction of more multi-role fighter aircraft (MRFA) to strengthen its combat fleet.
Speaking to India Today, Air Marshal Kapoor said the IAF is keen to strengthen its fleet with next-generation fighter aircraft under the proposed MRFA programme. “We are looking forward to inducting more MRFA aircraft," he said, adding, “I cannot say which type as it is under deliberations."

His remarks come at a time when India is moving closer to clearing a major proposal to acquire 114 multi-role fighter jets, with the Rafale widely seen as a leading contender. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, is expected to consider granting Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for the programme, which is estimated to be worth around Rs 3.25 lakh crore.
The proposal had earlier received clearance from the Defence Procurement Board, marking a key step in the acquisition process and paving the way for formal negotiations. If approved, the deal would rank among India’s largest-ever fighter aircraft procurements.
The push for new aircraft comes amid a widening capability gap. The IAF currently operates around 29 fighter squadrons, well below its sanctioned strength of 42, at a time when security challenges persist along both the western and northern borders.
Under the proposed plan, 114 fighter jets are to be acquired, with a portion delivered in fly-away condition and the majority manufactured in India. A significant share of production is expected to take place domestically, in line with the government’s Make in India initiative, with high indigenous content envisaged.
