Raiders rookie Fernando Mendoza hit with damning verdict amid ex-NFL scout's harsh assessment(Getty Image)
The Las Vegas Raiders drafted Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick because they believe he can become the face of the franchise. Just weeks before training camp, though, the rookie has found himself at the center of a heated debate after one former NFL scout questioned whether he will ever live up to that belief. The strong criticism came even as Mendoza continues to learn the offense and waits to sign his rookie contract. While the Raiders remain patient, the comment quickly grabbed attention across NFL circles and sparked fresh discussion about the quarterback's future.
Former scout Daniel Kelly questions Fernando Mendoza while Raiders stay focused on development
The debate began when ESPN fantasy analyst Eric Karabell wrote on X that the Raiders had "upgraded" their quarterback room by adding Fernando Mendoza.
Soon after, former NFL scout Daniel Kelly fired back with a blunt response. "Fernando Mendoza is a guaranteed bust."
Kelly posted the remark on X in response to a Sleeper Raiders post highlighting Karabell's opinion. The short message spread quickly and divided fans, especially because Fernando Mendoza has not yet played an NFL snap. The criticism comes after an up-and-down offseason for the rookie. During organized team activities, The Athletic reporter Sam Warren noted that veteran Kirk Cousins handled the first-team reps while Mendoza spent most of his time working with the rookies.
Warren also reported that Mendoza's accuracy dipped during the final OTA practice and that he struggled against the Raiders' starting defense.Still, the coaching staff has consistently urged patience. Speaking after an OTA practice in June, Raiders quarterbacks coach Mie Sullivan said Mendoza remains in the early stages of learning the offense. "He's still learning what to do, making sure he knows his job, and then we can start to take some of the next steps, but it's a long road and a lot of work to do.
We're pleased with the work that he's been putting in to this point.
"The Las Vegas Raiders also have no reason to rush the rookie. Cousins entered the offseason as the experienced option and remains the favorite to open the 2026 season as the starting quarterback. That gives Mendoza valuable time to adjust to NFL speed before taking over the offense.Another talking point involves his contract. As of now, Fernando Mendoza remained one of only two first-round picks from the 2026 NFL Draft without a signed rookie deal, along with Ty Simpson of the Los Angeles Rams.
According to Raiders insider Q Myers, the delay centers on the payment schedule of Mendoza's signing bonus rather than the total value of the contract. Myers added that the expectation around the team remains that a deal will get done before training camp.Head coach Klint Kubiak echoed that approach after offseason workouts. He said the real evaluation begins during the 11 training camp practices before the first preseason game. For now, Daniel Kelly's "guaranteed bust" prediction remains just that, a prediction. The Las Vegas Raiders will judge Fernando Mendoza on what happens during training camp and on the field, not on one offseason opinion.
