Rail Push In Bangladesh Polls: Political Parties Promise Bullet Trains, New Corridors

Ahead of Bangladesh elections scheduled on February 12, all three key political parties – Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizen Party (NCP) – have released their manifestos. The poll promises include proposals for bullet train corridors and new rail projects.

BNP’s Manifesto

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)has promised to set up a bullet train network connecting Dhaka with key cities.

“Bullet train connectivity: Plans will be made to develop a high-speed rail network to connect Dhaka with major regional cities within one hour, progressively," the statement stated.

It has also vowed to bring in more express train services on major intercity routes. It further stated that public-private partnerships in passenger and freight corridors as well as urban rail systems would be encouraged to improve infrastructure and service quality.

The party also vowed to electrification and double-track construction on the Dhaka–Chittagong, Dhaka–Narayanganj, and Dhaka–Mymensingh corridors.

“Priority will be given to connecting Myanmar-based routes and the Dhaka–Kunming rail link to strengthen regional connectivity. Special concessions will be considered for students, persons with disabilities, and those above 60 years across metro and long-distance rail services," it said.

Jamaat-e-Islami Manifesto

In their manifesto, Jamaat-e-Islami has vowed to introduce high-speed train network from Dhaka. It also said that inter-city rail connectivity would be improved and that new-age trains would be introduced to reduce travel time.

“Railway Modernization: Inter-city rail connectivity will be strengthened. Modern trains will be introduced to ensure short travel time. Dhaka-centre passenger and high-speed train will be started," it stated.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the party chief Dr Shafiqur Rahman had on February 7 promised to bring bullet train system connecting Dhaka and Sylhet.

NCP Manifesto

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has promised to establish an integrated public transport system between Dhaka and Chittagong. It also vowed to increase freight train services to reduce the burden of trucks on the roads.
