Train users who often struggle to book tickets may soon find relief as the Indian Railways is planning to modernise its reservation system by December, increasing the booking capacity by five times.
The railway ministry announced on Sunday that the new passenger reservation system (PRS) will facilitate over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, compared to the 32,000 tickets per minute at present.
Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) has been developing the project for the past few months. According to the ministry, the upgraded PRS design is agile, flexible, and scalable, capable of handling 10 times the current load.
“It will significantly enhance the ticket booking capacity. The new PRS will allow over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute. This will be an increase of roughly five times from 32,000 tickets per minute in the current PRS," the ministry said.
The new PRS will significantly enhance ticket booking capacity, enabling over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, which is roughly five times the current capacity of 32,000 tickets per minute. In addition, the ticket enquiry capacity will be enhanced tenfold, from four lakh to more than 40 lakh enquiries per minute.
“The new PRS also has a multilingual and user-friendly booking and enquiry interface," the ministry said.
Under the new system, users will be able to select their preferred seat and view the fare calendar. The system will include integrated facilities for Divyangjan (differently abled), students, and patients.
OTP-BASED TATKAL AUTHENTICATION FROM JULY END
The ministry has rescheduled the implementation of OTP-based authentication for Tatkal bookings to the end of July from the earlier date of July 15.
Starting July 1, however, Indian Railways will allow only authenticated users to book Tatkal tickets on the IRCTC website and mobile app.
“OTP-based authentication will be done for Tatkal bookings from the end of July. The railway minister instructed officials to broadbase the authentication mechanism for Tatkal bookings," the ministry said.
The ministry further said the authentication should be done using Aadhaar or any other verifiable government ID available in the user’s DigiLocker account.
In June, News18 reported that Indian Railways had introduced several changes to improve the Tatkal booking experience for the general public, effective July 1, including mandatory Aadhaar for booking Tatkal tickets through IRCTC’s official website and mobile app.
“These measures reflect the continuous efforts of Indian Railways to modernise its systems and make them more citizen friendly," the statement added.
