Rain brings relief to city, mercury dips across Odisha

Bhubaneswar: After days of sweltering heat and oppressive humidity, residents of Bhubaneswar got much-needed relief on Monday as light to moderate rain brought down the temperature and improved weather conditions across the city.Showers, accompanied by cool winds and overcast skies, changed the mood of the capital, with many residents stepping out to enjoy the refreshing weather after several days of discomfort.The city woke up to cloudy skies and intermittent rain, easing the humid conditions that had affected daily life. Parks, roadsides and tea stalls saw increased activity as people made the most of the cooler weather.“Having a cup of hot tea at a roadside tea stall while it rains outside is a fitting way to welcome the rainy season.

My friends and I enjoyed the drizzle during our morning walk at a park and then had tea here. We feel relaxed after several days of hot and humid weather,” said Anirudh Kund, a resident of Patia.Many people took to social media to share pictures and videos of the rain-soaked city, while families and office-goers welcomed the break from the heat. Bhubaneswar recorded 4.4 mm of rainfall by 8.30 am on Monday. Rain continued in parts of the city till around 10 am.

Schoolchildren were seen carrying umbrellas on their way to school, while many motorcyclists wore raincoats during their commute.According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the rainfall was part of increased monsoon activity across Odisha. Several districts recorded rain during the past 24 hours, leading to a noticeable drop in day temperatures. Weather officials said favourable atmospheric conditions were supporting the further advance of the southwest monsoon over the state.The recent showers have improved weather conditions in both coastal and interior regions, where high humidity and rising temperatures had caused discomfort. Day temperatures and humidity levels have declined in many areas, making the weather comparatively pleasant.The IMD has forecast continued rainfall activity across several parts of Odisha over the coming days. Light to moderate rain, along with thunderstorms and gusty winds at isolated places, is likely in many districts. Authorities have advised people to remain alert during thunderstorms and follow weather advisories issued from time to time.Farmers have welcomed the rain as it is expected to support the ongoing kharif sowing season. Adequate and timely rainfall is crucial for paddy cultivation, the state’s principal crop.
