Rain exposes civic woes as potholes, cave-ins emerge across Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: Rainy conditions prevailed in Ahmedabad over the past two days. On Sunday night, showers were recorded in the city’s western areas, including Sarkhej, Maktampura and Bopal.

Between 6pm and 10pm on Sunday, Sarkhej received 104mm of rain in just four hours, triggering waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Continuous drizzle during the past two days also led to complaints of large potholes and road cave-ins at several locations, including Shela, Shilaj, Sarkhej and Gota. Scattered rainfall was also reported from several parts of the city after 6pm on Monday.During the period, the city reported 12 incidents of tree fall, seven cases of waterlogging, two road cave-ins, and three safety notices issued to dangerous buildings.

Additionally, 68 potholes were reported across different zones, and repair work was initiated. Of these, 21 were in the East Zone, 10 in the North Zone, 12 in the North West Zone, three in the South Zone, four in the South West Zone and 18 in the West Zone.On Monday morning, a road leading to Aryaman Bungalows in Shilaj developed a cave-in and was cordoned off to prevent vehicles from getting trapped. Similarly, a cave-in was reported near Prasang Party Plot in Gota, while a school bus got stuck due to a road cave-in in the Shela area.

Rain returned to Ahmedabad on Monday evening, with the city recording an average rainfall of 5.6mm between 6pm and 7pm. Bakrol received the highest rainfall at 25mm during the hour. Other areas recorded 10mm in Paldi, 13.5mm in Vasna, 12mm in Sarkhej, 19mm in Navrangpura and 8.5mm in Memnagar. Following Monday’s showers, two incidents of tree fall, and one case of waterlogging were reported.
