Rain havoc has disrupted lives in Himachal Pradesh, causing severe damage to properties too. At least 72 people have been reported dead due to cloudbursts and flash floods across the state.
Himachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri on Sunday informed about the death toll in the state and said,"A lot of havoc is wreaked during the monsoon in Himachal Pradesh. Nearly 72 people have lost their lives. The epicentre of this is Mandi, which suffered a lot of loss. The state government has geared up a lot of machinery, and we are restoring roads, water supply and electricity on a large scale."
Assuring safety of people, the Deputy CM said,"Though it is a challenge, Himachal Pradesh’s officers and workers are working with the government with full force, rising above politics. we have established relief camps with food facilities and officers deployment. Simultaneous cloudburst happened and alerts are still coming in. We are making all efforts to keep our people safe."
Roads Blocked, Electricity Transformers Disrupted In Several Areas
Heavy rain has disrupted lives in the hill state. As many as 269 roads have been blocked 285 electricity transformers disrupted, and 278 water supply schemes rendered non-functional in the last 48 hours, as stated by the State Emergency Operation Centre (SECO).
While Kullu remained the second-most affected area with 39 roads blocked, Chamba reported 32 blocked roads and 17 damaged transformers across its subdivisions, including Salooni, Dalhousie, and Bharmour.
The SEOC stated on July 6 that Mandi remains the worst-affected district, with 200 roads blocked due to heavy rains.
Severe Water Crisis In Mandi’s Thunag After Cloudburst
Thunag in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi is facing a severe water crisis as floods washed away machinery, water pipes, and transformers used to extract and supply clean water.
Speaking to ANI about the shortage, Jal Shakti Department Chief Engineer Anju Sharma who visited the area said,"All 81 panchayats in this constituency have been affected. Our people are tracing the sources… We collected all the staff as it is very difficult to reach from one place to another."
She added, “The pipes have been arranged, but it is difficult to reach… We have gone a lot back for permanent restoration. The big schemes have suffered a huge setback. Our transformers and machinery have been washed away and tracing it is a huge challenge for the department, and trying to do it on a war level. I want to appeal to the people to support the department and use the water from storage or hand pumps and drink only after boiling it."
