Rain momentum slows, but yellow alert today

Panaji: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Panaji, has extended the yellow coded alert by two more days till Thursday, as the quantum of rainfall came down significantly on Wednesday.A daily average rainfall of just 2.2mm was recorded for the state on Wednesday, as compared to 9.9mm, 7.8mm and 25.6mm recorded on Sep 14, 15 and 16.The state average rain of 25.6mm on Sep 14 is the highest during this month so far. The total seasonal rainfall stood at 2,993.2mm on Wednesday morning while a total of 2,883.6mm is considered normal at this stage. The surplus at present is just 3.8%.The Panaji meteorological centre has forecast light to moderate rainfall over both districts till Thursday.

Heavy rainfall is very likely in isolated places, the bulletin states.The quantum of rainfall came down significantly during the last 24 hours till Wednesday morning. The highest rainfall of just 6.7mm was recorded at Sanguem while Sanqueim recorded 5.4mm, Ponda, Mapusa and Dharbandora recorded 2 mm each and Panaji 2.2mm.Other centres recorded rain on a lesser scale. The rainfall figures of Pernem, Valpoi and Margao, meanwhile, were not available.

While there is no weather warning during subsequent days, light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur.Due to squally weather in the sea up to 75km from coast between Goa coast and south Maharashtra coast, fishermen have been warned not to venture out to sea for a few days. The wind speed is likely to reach 40 to 50kmph gusting to around 60km.
