Rain triggers floods, landslides across Mizoram; 46 families evacuated in Tlabung

Aizawl-Thenzawl-Lunglei highway shut for second day after rockfallAizawl: Incessant rain accompanied by thunderstorm continued to create havoc at many places across Mizoram. However, no loss of life has been reported till date even as floods and landslides have resulted in major inconveniences to the people of the state.Officials said at least 46 families in Tlabung town of south Mizoram’s Lunglei district bordering Bangladesh have been evacuated to safe places due to their homes being endangered by the Mizoram-Bangladesh border river Khawthlangtuipui, which has swollen beyond the danger mark.The families have been accommodated in the Border Trade & Facilitation Centre, Middle School and Young Mizo Association (YMA) Zawlbuk, or community hall, in Tlabung town.

Earlier, homes of 4 families were completely destroyed by a massive landslide at Chawnpui locality of Tlabung town.The National Highway 54 also continued to be blocked by a major landslide at the outskirts of Bualte village in Lunglei district, where over 300 travellers were stranded at the village for 3 days. The stranded travellers have been provided food and water by the local volunteers belonging to the YMA. The landslide at Bualte village continues to cut off Lawngtlai and Siaha district from the rest of the state.

Meanwhile, the Aizawl-Thenzawl-Lunglei World Bank-funded highway has been blocked by massive landslides at Ngaizel area in the southern outskirts of the capital, Aizawl city, for 2 consecutive days on Thursday. The second heavy rockfall on Thursday rendered the road to the southern part of the state completely blocked.The state disaster management & rehabilitation department officials said a number of road blocks have been reported from many locations in the state due to landslides, rockfalls and the collapse of retaining walls while power supply and mobile network as well as internet connection have been disrupted in many places.
