Delhi Police on Wednesday registered an FIR of attempt to murder in connection with the attack on Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a “Jan Sunwai" programme on Wednesday. Following this, the police produced the attacker, Rajesh Khimji Sakriya, before the court late at night, following which he was sent to a five-day police custody.
Delhi Chief Minister was addressing a weekly ‘Jan Sunwai‘ programme at her residence when a man entered, allegedly handed over a paper to Gupta, and then shouted, slapped her, pulled her hair, and abused her.
The accused grabbed the Chief Minister by her hair and did not let go for quite some time, sources reported.
The individual was identified as 41-year-old Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakriya, a resident of Gujarat’s Rajkot. He was overpowered by the security team and arrested. The Delhi Police registered an attempt to murder case against him for attacking the Delhi Chief Minister.
Meanwhile, Rajesh Sakriya, the accused in the attack on Delhi CM Rekha Gupta, has earlier as well faced cases and had been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) that relate to causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, news agency PTI quoted officals as saying.
Delhi CM Reacted
In her first statement hours after the attack, Gupta responded by saying that it was a “cowardly attack" on the BJP-led government’s effort to serve the people of the national capital.
“The attack on me during this morning’s public hearing was not just an attack on me, but a cowardly attempt on our resolve to serve Delhi and work for the welfare of the people," the Chief Minister wrote in a post on X.
The incident triggered a political row with the ruling BJP alleging a conspiracy by the Opposition. However, the opposition, including Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress, condemned the incident, saying there is no place for violence in a democracy.
