Rajya Sabha Elections: How Parimal Nathwani's Entry Complicates UPA's Jharkhand Arithmetic

Parimal Nathwani's entry has turned Jharkhand's Rajya Sabha election into a high-stakes numbers battle, putting focus on cross-voting and alliance unity.

The race for two Rajya Sabha seats from Jharkhand appeared headed towards a predictable outcome until the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-backed candidature of industrialist and former Rajya Sabha MP Parimal Nathwani altered the calculations.

With the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) fielding Baidyanath Ram and the Congress nominating Pranav Jha, the contest was initially expected to be a straightforward exercise in coalition arithmetic.

Nathwani’s entry, however, has transformed the election into a closely watched political battle where every vote is now under scrutiny.

The elections are scheduled amid intense speculation over cross-voting, alliance discipline and the ability of candidates to attract support beyond their officially declared numbers.

The JMM-led ruling alliance currently enjoys a comfortable majority in the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly, with 56 MLAs. A candidate requires 28 first-preference votes to secure victory in the Rajya Sabha election.

On paper, the alliance has enough strength to ensure the election of both its candidates if all legislators vote according to party lines.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), meanwhile, has 24 MLAs, comprising the BJP, AJSU Party, JD(U) and LJP (Ram Vilas) legislators, leaving it short of the required number for a guaranteed victory.

That arithmetic has placed Nathwani at the centre of the contest.

His candidature has shifted the discussion from simple numerical strength to whether political relationships and strategic voting can upset the expected outcome.

WHY NATHWANI’S ENTRY MATTERS

Unlike a conventional Opposition candidate, Nathwani enters the race with a unique political profile.

A businessman who represented Jharkhand in the Rajya Sabha for two consecutive terms between 2008 and 2020 as an Independent, Nathwani has maintained relationships across party lines in the state.

His candidature also gained attention because it came shortly after he met Chief Minister Hemant Soren, before eventually securing NDA support.

Speaking after filing his nomination, Nathwani said he would seek support based on the work he had undertaken during his earlier tenure.

He also expressed confidence that his developmental record would help him win another opportunity to represent Jharkhand in Parliament.

Meanwhile, BJP leaders have argued that his previous contribution to Jharkhand’s development and his familiarity with the state make him a viable candidate capable of attracting broader support.

However, political observers believe the BJP’s calculation rests on Nathwani’s ability to secure votes beyond the NDA’s official tally.

RULING ALLIANCE DISMISSES THREAT

Amid the political heat, JMM and Congress have publicly projected confidence.

Congress leaders have argued that the BJP’s backing of an Independent candidate reflects political compulsion rather than strategy.

Party spokesperson Rajesh Thakur was quoted by The Indian Express as saying that the ruling alliance possesses the numbers required to win both seats and maintained that alliance partners would vote together.

JMM leaders have also rejected suggestions of internal divisions. The party has insisted that its legislators remain united and that there is little possibility of defections during voting.

At the same time, leaders from the ruling alliance have accused the BJP of attempting to influence legislators.

JMM and Congress leaders alleged that the BJP’s move was aimed at creating uncertainty in an otherwise settled contest.
