The ambitious project to establish a world-class Site Museum and Interpretation Centre at Rakhigarhi has received a significant directional update. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has directed administrative officials to ensure the upcoming facility explicitly depicts the vast geographical expanse of ancient “Akhand Bharat" (undivided India). The directive aims to provide visitors with a comprehensive visual understanding of how the heritage and trade networks of the ancient settlement extended across a broader civilisational landscape.
Presiding over a high-level project review meeting in Chandigarh, the Chief Minister emphasised that Rakhigarhi should transcend its identity as a conventional archaeological excavation zone. The objective is to position the site as an international heritage hub that effectively bridges millennia-old history with contemporary perspectives. To achieve this, the state government plans to integrate detailed mapping installations that showcase the expansive reach of the region’s ancient culture alongside advanced architectural models.
Technical Grandeur and Thematic Galleries
The massive museum complex, spanning nearly 100,000 square feet, represents a significant investment in cultural preservation, supported by an approved allocation of Rs 90 crore from the Union Ministry of Finance. According to the development framework presented by heritage and tourism officials, the facility will move away from static showcases by relying heavily on advanced digital, electronic, and audio-visual technologies.
The site museum will feature ten distinct, theme-based galleries divided across its floors. These spaces are meticulously curated to illustrate the scientific sophistication of the 8,000-year-old Saraswati–Sindhu civilisation. Dedicated exhibits will focus on the intricate urban planning, residential architecture, advanced drainage setups, and sophisticated water management systems discovered at the location. Furthermore, the galleries will document the multi-phase history of the ongoing excavations currently active across three of the site’s seven prominent mounds.
Cultivating Education and Regional Growth
A core focus of the newly approved blueprint is interactive public education. The centre will house specialised orientation zones where short films, 3D presentations, and digital projections introduce the “Civilisation of the Seven Rivers". For younger audiences, experiential learning spaces will allow visitors to interact with high-fidelity replicas of ancient seals, historic weights, and bricks, alongside participating in traditional games from the Harappan era.
Strategically located near National Highway-152, the completed complex is anticipated to fundamentally alter the tourism landscape of Haryana. By elevating Rakhigarhi onto the global archaeological map, the state administration intends to generate substantial local employment, encourage academic research, and foster regional economic development, transforming the ancient site into an enduring monument of shared civilisational identity.
