In a touching event on Friday, 14-year-old Shivam’s eyes filled with tears when 16-year-old Anamta Ahmad travelled from Mumbai to Valsad, Gujarat, to tie a rakhi. This gesture was profoundly significant, as the hand Anamta used to tie the rakhi belonged to Shivam’s late sister, Riya, who passed away last year due to a brain haemorrhage. Shivam fondly recognised the hand he had held and eaten with during his childhood.

Three years ago, Anamta was electrocuted by a high-tension wire hanging from the roof of her relative’s house in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, which led to the amputation of her right hand. She received Riya’s hand after a Valsad family donated their daughter’s organs, including her kidneys, liver, lungs, cornea, and both hands, benefiting eight individuals in total.

The unique Raksha Bandhan was celebrated along Valsad’s picturesque Tithal Beach Road, with emotions running high. Doctors describe Anamta as “the world’s youngest recipient of a hand transplant at the shoulder level," following a complex surgery after Riya was declared brain-dead in September 2024.

Riya’s mother, Trishna, expressed her emotions, saying, “When I held Anamta’s hand, it felt like Riya had come back to life. The pain in my heart transformed into deep affection for this girl who travelled a long distance to tie a rakhi on my son’s wrist. Anamta is now my daughter too, and Riya will always live within her. While we are still grieving, it is heartening to see Anamta happy and thriving."

Shivam noted, “Anamta’s hands felt just like Riya’s, even the texture. It was as if I was seeing Riya again. This year, Anamta came to meet me from Mumbai; next year, I will visit her. This tradition will continue for life." Anamta shared, “I never met Riya, but she has made my life complete. I feel a deep connection to her."
