The Ramakrishna Mission has launched the ‘PM Lanka Boats’ project to restore the livelihoods of several traditional fishing families along the Godavari belt, whose boats and nets were damaged in the aftermath of Montha Cyclone. The boats will be distributed to Peddamainavani (PM) Lanka’s fishermen.
The initiative aims to support 300 vulnerable fishing families by providing boats and nets worth ₹2.10 crore. In the first phase, 100 fishermen will receive equipment valued at approximately ₹70 lakh. The distribution programme is scheduled to be held on February 28.
West Godavari District Collector and District Magistrate Chadalawada Nagarani said, “Ensuring timely distribution and fair identification of beneficiaries has been our priority. With careful coordination and local support, we are determined that the boats reach those families most affected by the cyclone, restoring both their livelihoods and dignity.”
The PM Lanka Boats project is expected to bring relief to cyclone-affected families and help them rebuild their lives through sustainable livelihood support.
The cyclone had left dozens of families without their primary source of income, pushing many into financial distress. The loss of boats and nets not only disrupted daily fishing activities, but also affected allied livelihoods dependent on the fishing trade.
Under the project, the new boats have been designed to suit local river conditions, and will be provided along with high-quality fishing nets. The support is expected to enable beneficiaries to resume fishing operations safely and independently, reducing reliance on rented equipment and improving daily earnings.
Fishing activities sustain a broader network of livelihoods, including women vendors in local markets, fish processing households, and small traders dependent on regular supply. Officials noted that restoring fishing assets would help revive the economic cycle within these communities and reduce vulnerability to debt.
